The Sony NEX 3N is a new addition to the popular NEX series, famous for their generous APS-C sensor housed in a compact body. The entry-level 3-series is specifically aimed at compact camera users looking for better image quality but hoping to avoid the bulk and perceived complexity of a DSLR.

The NEX-3N comes with the recent released Sony’s 16-50mm retractable power zoom lens, which offers a very useful range from wide angle to mid tele (24-75mm equivalent) and optical image stabilization. This combines with the 3N’s status as the smallest mirrorless camera to include an 16.1 MP APS-C sensor, making it an extremely compact  interchangeable lens mirrorless camera.  A new feature with the 3N is the revised flip-up 3" 460K dot LCD – it rotates up by 180 degrees which makes self-portraits easier.  The SD card slot has also been repositioned from the bottom of the camera to the accessory port panel on the side of the camera. It is  Full HD 1080i video capable at 60fps and 1080p video at 24fps. The NEX-3N is effective in challenging lighting conditions without using the built-in flash, thanks to a wide ISO range of 100-16000 and advanced noise reduction.

As an entry level of the NEX series and putting clear differences to the NEX 5 models, the 3N misses out on the faster on-sensor phase-detection autofocus seen on the 5R. That means it can feel a bit less responsive when photographing a moving subject. The camera also makes do without the touchscreen or Wi-Fi functions offered by the 5R, and forgoes the accessory port the F3 had, so there’s no way of attaching an external viewfinder.

Combined with a small power zoom 16-50mm les, the new NEX -3N is surely the smallest APS-C interchangeable mirrorless camera available. If you do not need the touch screen, Wi-Fi and fast AF system, the NEX-3N is a perfect entry level camera for you.

The NEX-3N is now available to pre-order at B&H.
