Nikon has announced the release of the AF-S NIKKOR 58mm f/1.4G, so it looks like there is no AF-S 50mm f/1.2 afterall. The new 58mm f/1.4 is deigned to have smooth and beautiful bokeh, low coma flare no distortion or fringes across the entire frame, even at f/1.4. The lens utilises Nano coating to reduce flare and ghosting. The focal length of 58mm is an interesting one, but this selection is to give an 85mm focal length equivalent when used on DX cameras. In the press release, Nikon has emphasised numerous times about its superior quality in rendering and reproduction capability, as well as the quality of bokeh. So it looks like this lens is aimed to score 10/10 on image quality. How does it compare to the “not too old” AF-S 50mm f/1.4, we will have to wait and see. The new Nikon 58mm f/1.4 is retail for $1699USD.

The Nikon 58mm f/1.4 is available to pre-order here.

AF-S NIKKOR 58mm f/1.4G Primary Features

  • A fast normal lens with a focal length of 58mm and maximum aperture of f/1.4 that utilizes advanced optical design technologies
  • Minimization of sagittal coma flare for high reproduction capability of point light sources as sharp points across the entire frame
  • Sharp, high-resolution images can be reproduced even at the maximum aperture
  • Original lens characteristics that provide natural depth reproduction with which the degree of bokeh moderately changes as the distance from the sharply focused point increases
  • Controlled light falloff retains natural brightness across the entire frame even at the maximum aperture of f/1.4
  • Nano Crystal Coat effectively reduces flare and ghost
