When it comes to taking landscape photos, have you ever asked yourself these questions?

What’s the best camera setting?

Should I use f/11 or f/16?

Where should I set the focus?

Should I focus the rocks on the foreground or the mountains at the far end?

Like all kind of photography, there is no such thing as best camera setting. But there are general guidelines that you can follow to set up your camera to give you the best results. In this blog post, we will talk about some of the important aspects for landscape photography.

Before we dig into camera setting, there are some essential items that are useful for landscape photography. If you want to create stunning landscape photos, these items are a must, remote shutter trigger, tripod and filters like GND, ND and CPL. Especially with tripods and filters, they work best together to allow you to drag your shutter for long exposure images. CPL filter is great for landscape, getting rid of the glare and reflection of water. However, if you are shooting anything with the sky, give GND filters a go. Tripod is important if you are shooting in low light, usually after dawn or before sunrise. It allows you to work with a much lower shutter speed while maintaining at a smaller aperture.

Just like any kind of photography, your camera setting is a compromise between ISO, Shutter speed and Aperture. If we consider most landscape photos taken under good weather and bright light, then ideally ISO should be in the lower range; ISO 100 – 400.

Most of the time with landscape photography, we want everything to be in focus, so should we use the smallest aperture f/22? Picture sharpness varies with aperture, for most lenses the sharpest images are often obtained at around f/5.6- f/11. At smaller aperture such as f/16- f/22, image sharpness is constrained by diffraction. So unless you really need to, stay above f/11.

Now an interesting aspect of choosing your aperture is while smaller aperture like f/11 do give you more things in focus, it may not be necessary at all if you understand the concept of Depth of Field (DoF). Basically, DoF is the zone or the range of the recorded scene that is consider sharp (focus). It varies with aperture, sensor size, subject distance and focal length.

If we consider some typical parameters used in landscape photography; say focal length at 24mm for wide angle images, subject distance at 10m. The DoF for the different aperture settings is shown in the below table. What the table tells us is at f/11, the DoF is from 1.45m to infinity, that means, everything in between 1.45m to infinity will be in focus. Compare to f/8, everything in between 1.94m to infinity will be in focus. This tells us:

With the three aperture settings, the DoF is very wide, it goes all the way to infinity. This is great for landscape.

The DoF doesn’t change much with the three aperture settings, there is only a meter difference in DoF from f/5.6 to f/11.

The DoF is wider with DX format and the difference in DoF with different aperture settings is even much less.

In reality, you are not going to notice the difference in DoF, even at f/5.6, the DoF is still very wide. What you might see different is a slight sharper image with f/8 and f/11. At 24mm, shooting at f/5.6 or f/11 makes minimal difference.

The next question is where do I set the focus? To answer this question, the concept of hyperfocal distance is important. If you are not familiar with hyperfocal distance, read about it here. Basically Hyperfocal Distance is the closest distance at which a lens can be focused while keeping objects at infinity acceptably sharp; that is, the focus distance with a maximum depth of field.

Consider the different focus setting in the below table. With a focus distance of 1m, the DoF is only about 1m (0.71m-1.69m), but if you set your focus to 2.42m, the DoF extends to infinity. That is a huge difference by a slight change in focus distance (1m to 2.42m). Focusing past the hyperfocal distance (2.42m), there is not much difference in the DoF whether the focus distance is at 2.42m or 1000m.

So the tip here is, know your lens’ hyperfocal distance and set the focus to hyperfocal distance or at least beyond it. In reality the difference is minimal whether you set the focus to a rock in the foreground (10m) or the trees in the middle (100m) or the objects in the background 1000m away. But ideally, you would focus at 10m rather than 1000m to maximise the DoF.

Format

FX

f/8

2.39m – infinity

2.42m

I took this photo at f/5 and focused at the two big rocks near the front. At this setting, my DoF extends to infinity already.

For shutter speed, if you have a tripod then you can get away with any shutter speed. But if you are shooting hand held, use this equation as a guideline to set your minimum shutter speed; Shutter speed = 1/ focal length. For example, if you are shooting at 24mm, then your minimum shutter speed is at 1/24s, but normally I would suggest shooting at at least 1/50s. This concept is suitable for static object only, if you are shooting moving object like ocean or water, then you need to adjust accordingly.

There are times when you are shooting in bright daylight, you will need to watch the shutter speed, too. Most DSLRs offer shutter speed up to 1/8000s, some entry level DSLRs are limited to 1/4000s. If you are hitting this limit in a really bright day or wanting to keep the shutter speed down to match the flash sync speed then consider using ND filters to reduce the light hitting your camera sensor.

Keep the shutter speed to relatively high to freeze action. The below image was taken at 1/1000s.

Or drag the shutter to slow down the action.

Landscape photography usually shoots with a smaller aperture to maximise the DoF. However, it is important to know that focusing distance also plays a big role in controlling the DoF. Focusing at hyperfocal distance will give you the largest DoF, while focusing past hyperfocal distance will still give you a reasonably wide DoF but focusing before hyperfocal distance will significantly reduce the DoF. When you are focusing at hyperfocal distance or beyond hyperfocal distance, the increase in DoF with smaller aperture is insignificant, but image sharpness does improve with smaller aperture until diffraction issue appears at f/16-f/22.

Sony announces its third generation NEX series – Sony NEX-F3. It is a much improved version of the NEX-C3 with a few distinct functions added.

You can pre-order your Sony NEX-F3 at B&H.

Sony’s α NEX-F3 digital camera delivers professional quality photos with a compact, pocket-sized body, allowing consumers to explore the creative world of high-quality, interchangeable lens photography in a refreshingly fun and entertaining way.

The new NEX-F3 camera features the same space-saving mirrorless design as other models in Sony’s E-mount family as well as an advanced, 16.1 effective megapixel Exmor™ APS HD CMOS sensor, identical in size to sensors found in traditional DSLR cameras. The large sensor takes in more light during image capture, resulting in flawless, low-noise photographs and crisply detailed Full HD videos (60i/24p). Photographers can also easily create images with beautiful defocus effects, where the subject is focused sharply against a smoothly blurred background.

The NEX-F3 camera adds a whole new perspective to self-portraits with a 180° Tiltable LCD screen, a first for Sony’s E-mount camera line. By simply holding the camera at arm’s length and flipping the LCD screen vertically, users can adjust the on-screen preview image and properly frame photos.

Additionally, the new model features a useful built-in flash to broaden shooting options indoors or in low light situations. Already introduced on Sony’s acclaimed NEX-7 camera, this pop-up flash handily brightens portraits and other shots without the need to carry an additional flash accessory.

The new NEX-F3 camera also includes the new Auto Portrait Framing feature for creating top-quality portraits quickly and easily. This innovative feature identifies a subject’s position in a composed image, and follows the “rule of thirds” to trim the scene appropriately around the subject’s face, creating a beautifully composed portrait. The cropped portrait is then boosted to full resolution using Sony’s unique By Pixel Super Resolution technology, which uses pattern matching to maintain superb image detail, tones and textures in the photo. Both the original and cropped image files are saved for review.

By Pixel Super Resolution Technology is also used for the “Clear Image Zoom” feature, which digitally doubles the effective magnification of any lens attached to the camera. Ideal for travel and everyday shooting, it’s a great way to boost maximum focal length without carrying extra hardware.

Other convenient essentials added to the new NEX-F3 camera include the Superior Auto mode, which intelligently recognizes a wide range of scenes and subjects and adjusts settings automatically. Battery stamina has been boosted to an industry-leading 470 shots (approx.) on a single charge – an approximate 18% improvement over its predecessor, the NEX-C3 model.

The camera is compatible with the FDA-EV1S viewfinder accessory (sold separately), which offers a high-contrast, high-resolution OLED viewfinder display and a wide viewing angle. The NEX-F3 model also features a high-quality, premium-feel grip for more comfortable handling and can be charged via either USB or a standard AC outlet.

DRTV puts the Canon 7D to a set of torture tests. If you think dropping a camera is bad enough, try freezing it in ice and setting it on fire.

To be honest, I thought the Canon 7D was gone when it turned into an ice block. Check out how DRTV (Kai) tackled the Canon 7D in this toughest torture test.

If you are a Canon 7D owner or owner of any other pro DSLR, you will appreciate your camera is framed using aluminium alloy and not plastic after seeing this video.

Everyone knows how to focus static subject. You can manually set the focus using the focus ring or you can auto focus by half pressing the shutter button. Once focus is locked take the shot by fully pressing the shutter button.

The camera setting is simple, it doesn’t really matter what the setting is, as long as you pressed the focus button, it should do the job well.

Nailing the focus on a moving subject is a little bit more complex, but with some practice and correct camera setting, you can rely your camera to get the focus right.

Some of the newer pro DSLRs offer stunning frame rate like the Nikon D800 (4 FPS), Canon 5D3 (6 FPS) and Nikon D4 (12 FPS), they can capture fast moving subject, but the hardest work is getting that focus right.

Here is what you need to set your camera to for shooting moving subject.

To shoot moving subject, set the camera AF mode to AF-C continuous servo for Nikon and Al Servo for Canon. You can then set how many dynamic AF points you want to assist with the selected AF point. For example in the Nikon D700, D800, D3, D3s and D4, you can choose from 9 points, 21 points or 51 points dynamic AF points. More dynamic AF points is not necessary better, more AF points can lead to longer processing time as well as more prone to AF error. So it is important to understand the best AF setting depending on your shooting subject.

If you are shooting something moving relatively slow, like a runner on the track, you can use 9 point dynamic area AF. The selected AF point is where you want to focus on, and the 9 AF points around the the selected AF point will assist with the focus to track the moving subject if it move outside the selected AF point.

The 21 point dynamic area AF has a larger AF coverage, this is used if your moving subject is moving relatively fast, like a soccer play on the field. The 21 AF points around the middle AF point will assist with the focus to track the moving subject if it move outside the selected AF point.

The 51 point dynamic area AF uses all the available AF points and has the largest AF coverage, this is used if you want to track very fast moving subject like birds. All of the 51 AF points will be used to assist with the focus, it will track the moving subject using all the 51 dynamic AF points.

Once you have the camera setting set up, here are the steps to focus your subject

1. Switch to single AF point. Focus your subject, either by pressing AF-ON or half press the shutter.

2. While your subject is moving, hold the AF-ON or half press the shutter to continue to focus on the subject. Depending on how many dynamic points you have selected, either 9, 21 or 51 points, the AF system will used the available AF points to help to focus the moving subject.

3. Press the shutter fully to take the shot, keep holding the AF-ON or half press the shutter to continuously focus on the subject as the subject moves.

Here is a set of sequential shots taken at the Wellington Fashion Week. I set the camera to AF-C continuous servo AF and uses 21 points dynamic area AF since my subject covers a lot of the frame, so a large dynamic AF area works better. As the model walks towards the end of the run way, the focus changes, I held down the focus button as the model walks towards me to keep her in focus and at the same time changes the zoom from 280mm to 140mm to frame the shots.

Canon 5D3, D700, D800 and D4 all have amazing AF system which you can rely on. The shots below are from my D700 which kept the subject very well focussed.

Nikon D4 first started to ship on March 16th, but not only until then I made my pre-order. I didn’t expect it will arrive so soon, but with only about a month of wait, I am surprise to say it is here. If you haven’t got yours yet, you can pre order yours at B&H. Get in quick, they will be hard to get for the next 12 months.

To no surprise the Nikon D4 is boxed in the same traditional golden colour box that uses for all their DSLRs.

Upon opening the box, it is nice to see Nikon has included a Sony 16GB XQD card and reader. Personally, I wouldn’t go buy a XQD card just to use it with the D4, I simply don’t need that kind of speed, but it is a nice little touch to give us an opportunity to test out these XQD cards. The Sony XQD is close to doubling the speed of Sandisk Extreme Pro, the technology has not mature yet, you can expect the future XQD cards will be much faster. It will certainly help to drive down the cost of CF cards.

The unbox of Nikon D4 finds the usual manual, paper works, CDs, Nikon straps, video cable. One major difference is the twin battery charger for the new EN-EL18 battery. The size is not much bigger than the Nikon D3s charger, but it does facilitate charging two batteries together. The new EN-EL18 battery is rated at lower capacity but it can still take thousands of shots per charge.

Here it is, the machine itself – Nikon D4. Not much difference from the front, except the body is much more contoured, especially the hot shoe bonnet. The shutter button is now suppose to be placed at a more convenient angle so your finger is in a more relax position, but I didn’t notice much difference. The dedicated metering mode selector used to be on the right hand side of the eye piece is now located as one of the three top left side buttons. Now I have to cycle through the meter modes using the dial instead of just flicking a dedicated selector.

The back of the Nikon D4 has quite a few changes; one significant change is the position of the vertical grip AF-ON. The new position is something needs to get use to, it doesn’t feel comfortable right now. A couple of joysticks have been added to control the AF point for both normal and vertical positions. The left side of the LCD now has five buttons instead of four, added with a zoom out button. I personally prefer dedicated zoom in and out buttons instead of using the dial to change the zoom level.

The buttons are now back illuminate.

The side gets a new headphone jack and Ethernet port. The AF-S/AF-C/M switch at the front have been simplified, to change from AF-S to AF-C, you will need to press the switch and use the dial to cycle between AF-S and AF-C. I prefer operation via dedicated switches, so I find this to be slow.

I haven’t had an extensive use of the Nikon D4 yet, but so far I like the ergonomic design and handling. There are some aspects I need to adjust to, especially the changes with the metering mode selector, the position of the vertical AF-ON, the missing of AF-S/AF-C dedicated switch and the AF and dynamic AF switch.

So far I haven’t put the Nikon D4 to any real test yet, so I haven’t notice much differences in high ISO performance or AF performance. But as I put it to pace, I will report more on its performance and my experience with it.

DSLRs used to be much more superior in megapixel, FPS, exposure metering, buffer, operation & control, AF system, ISO performance and access to lenses and flashes. But with mirrorless cameras like the Sony NEX-7, Leica M9, Fujifilm X-Pro 1, Nikon V1 and Olympus E-P3, much of these advantages are no longer exclusive to DSLRs only.

For example, Sony NEX-7 has a 24MP APS-C which is better than many DSLRs. It has electronic front curtain which makes 14 FPS possible. Its ISO performance matches with any entry level DSLRs It features twin wheel dials which make operation and control much more convenient, despite in a smaller body.

Mirrorless cameras have came a long way, but DSLRs still have better AF system which uses both contrast and phase detection, so shooting moving subjects is still better with DSLRs. Shooting with DSLR is of cause the only choice for professional work because it can access to the vast amount of different lenses and lighting equipment. For example wild life photographers need to use some of the biggest lenses ever made and studio photographers need to use tethering, wireless triggers and different lighting setup.

So which one is better for you? Is one better than the other ?

As mirrorless cameras mature, I don’t think image quality will pay a big part in the debate of Mirrorless vs DSLRs. You can pretty much expect mirrorless cameras and DSLRs both produce equally good quality images, except when compare to FF cameras, then you will see some differences at higher ISO. If you want the sharpest image possible then DSLR lenses will always produce sharper images, but I doubt you will see any difference even if you print it at A0 size.

To pick between mirrorless or DSLRs, there are three main aspects you need to think about :

Size – Are you mainly going to use the camera for travel or casual shooting? Are you willing to carry a heavier DSLR around?

Ergonomic design – Try out all the cameras, put them in your hands and have a feel of them. See which one feels more comfortable in your hands.

Expansion – Are you planning to get into photography? Are you planning to get more lenses and flashes later on?

One of the main reason for choosing mirrorless cameras is its compactness. Mirrorless cameras are much more portable, yet still capable of producing quality images. Because of this, a lot of photography hobbyist have turned to use mirrorless cameras. Many of them liked the retro or rangefinder look such as the E-P3, M9 and X-Pro 1. After all, taking photos should be fun.

DSLRs will always have a better ergonomic design simply because it is bigger, there are more dedicated buttons, wheel dials and switches instead of changing every setting inside the menu. Some people prefer the more solidly build DSLRs, they tend to have a better grip.

You will also need to think about are you planning to get into photography, perhaps you want to get a few more lenses and flashes in the future . then you might as well start early and get yourself familiar with DSLR.

So it is pretty obvious, if you want something compact, get a mirrorless camera, focus on which is the best mirrorless camera for you instead.

If you get pay for taking photos, then the obvious answer is get a DSLR. You want to be sure your clients get the best image quality possible.

If you are looking for a travel camera, you can get either depending on how willing you are on carrying a heavier DSLR.

If you are a starter who wants to get into photography, you can choose either, start off with an entry level DSLR or a good mirrorless camera, then once you have master the system, you can pursue further to medium size DSLR or pro size DSLR.

If you are mainly going to take photos of your family, babies, etc, mirrorless camera will do the job well.

Image quality is not really a big part in the debate of mirrorless vs DSLRs. Entry level DSLR and mirrorless cameras have pretty much the same image quality. But when you compare to FF camera, you will see some differences in some situation. Don’t focus too much on the image quality. I doubt you can see much difference between them. To put this to test. I have attached 10 photos below and to make it a bit more obvious, some are taken with a mirrorless camera and some are taken with a FF camera. So it should be much easier to identify than mirrorless vs entry level DSLR. Each image is numbered, leave your answers below and see who can get them all right.

This is a very fast 28mm wide-angle lens for full-frame (FX) Nikon cameras, or a fast 42mm near-normal lens when used with APS-C (DX) cameras. The f/1.8 maximum aperture will keep you shooting and capturing great images (stills or video) after the light gets too dim for others to shoot in.

Superior image quality and clarity is guaranteed by the Nano Crystal Coat (reduces ghosting and interior flare), Super Integrated Coating (enhanced light transmission and color consistency), and aspheric lens elements (minimize coma and other lens aberrations). Nikon’s Silent Wave Motor (SWM) delivers fast, accurate, and quiet autofocus, especially necessary for shooting video. This lens will focus to an impressively close 10.2" and the 7 rounded blades of the lens diaphragm lend a beautiful quality to the out-of-focus portions of your images (often called bokeh). This 28mm lens is a versatile lens that excels with landscapes, travel, groups, interiors, photojournalism and much, much more.
