Why would you want to put the Nikon 24mm f\/1.4<\/a> on a DX camera? The Nikon 24mm f\/1.4 is an amazing wide angle lens on FX cameras, but when you use it on a DX camera, it becomes a 36mm (FOV) f\/1.4. It gives a similar FOV to the Nikon 35mm f\/1.4, except that the Nikon 35mm f\/1.4 is slightly cheaper. A big difference with Nikon 24mm f\/1.4 on a DX thou is you won\u2019t get the same DoF characteristics as the 35mm even thou the FOV is equivalent of a 35mm. Take a look at the example below, the DOF is nearly doubled with the 24mm on a DX camera.<\/p>\n

35mm is a popular focal length used for street photography and photojournalism. A lot of photographers prefer to use 35mm than 24mm, because 35mm produces images that are less distorted than the 24mm. <\/p>\n

Despite of that, I sometimes use the 24mm on a DX camera for casual shooting because it is much lighter to carry than the D3\/D700. It gives me a popular 35mm FOV to work with and also gives me a fast f\/1.4 aperture for low light shooting. If I am a DX user,  I should use the 35mm f\/1.8 DX for low light shooting, but since I primarily shoot with full frame and don\u2019t stock a lot of DX lenses, I like to utilise what I have. It gives me a fast wide angle setup on a light weight DX camera.<\/strong><\/p>\n

If you want a fast wide angle lens on a DX, this is the fastest you can get. The 35m f\/1.8 DX is 2\/3 of a stop slower, but it is not much of a wide angle lens when used on a DX, The 17-55mm f\/2.8 weighs about the same, but is 2 stops slower.<\/p>\n

Here are some shots taken with the Nikon 24mm f\/1.4 on a DX set up at the local Shinobi sushi lounge<\/a>. All the images were taken at f\/1.4 – f\/2, ISO 800. I use this set up as my light weight<\/strong> casual shooting combo when I want to shoot in low light.<\/strong>  By the way Shinobi sushi<\/a> makes brilliant sushi and cocktails. It has a great sushi bar atmosphere where you can enjoy some saka and sushi while watching the brilliant knife work of their sushi chef.
