Back then it was the London Olympics year, coincidentally this year is also an Olympic year. It seems that there is no better time to release the ultimate camera than in the Olympic year. Just a few weeks ago, Nikon also announced its flagship Nikon D5.

Sporting a newly developed 20 MP sensor, the 1D X mark II offer a similar resolution as the Nikon D5 (20.8MP). The 1D X II features a low pass filter indifferent to the Nikon D5 which does not have a low pass filter. Equipped with a pair of all-new image processors, the new dual DIGIC 6+ processors can shoot through full-resolution images at up to 14 frames per second (12 fps previously) with auto exposure and predictive autofocus when using the optical viewfinder. It is possible to push the speed even faster up to 16fps when using Live View.

While the native sensitivity range remains unchanged at ISO 100-51,200, the Canon 1D X II offers a higher expanded ISO up to ISO 409,600. This is considered to be lower than the Nikon D5 which offers a native ISO up to 102,400 ( a stop higher).

As for the autofocus, the new 1D X Mark II offers a number of improvements, including the 1D X’s 61-point AF system with an expanded AF point coverage area, as well as similar to the earlier Canon 6D and 7D II, the 1D X II’s central AF point is sensitive down to –3EV which should be much more responsive in low light condition. Although the number of AF points remain the same as the predecessor Canon 1D X, all 61 of its AF points now offers focusing down to f/8 for every AF point. This is great for those those who use long telephoto lenses and teleconverters. The Canon 1D X II AF system has a total of 41 cross-type AF points in its array with five dual cross-type AF points, 20 cross-type AF points down to f/4-5.6, 21 cross-type AF points at f/5.6, and 20 horizontal-line sensitive AF points at f/5.6. This seems rather lacking when compare to Nikon’s more inferior 153 AF point system with 99 points cross types. The performance remains to be seen as we we expect for an April delivery world wide.

Cosmetic wise, there isn’t much difference between the 1D X and 1D X II from the outside. Other improved features including 4K 60p video, built in GPS, touch LCD, dual pixel CMOS AF as seen in Canon 70D and a new battery LP-E19. I have noticed that the battery life for the Canon 1D X II is rated for 1020-1210 shots but the Nikon D5 is rated for 3000+ shots per charge. This is a significant difference between the two flagship cameras. Personally, 1000-1200 shots per charge on the 1D X II is rather low.

The Canon 1D X II is available to order here at B&H

Primary Features

Fastest shooting EOS-1D, capable of up to 14 fps* full-resolution RAW or JPEG, and up to 16 fps* in Live View mode with new Dual DIGIC 6+ Image Processors.

Achieves a maximum burst rate of up to 170 RAWs in continuous shooting at up to 16 fps, and 4K movies using CFast™ cards in the new CFast 2.0™** slot.

Experience less noise in higher ISO images via a new 20.2 Megapixel full-frame CMOS sensor, with an ISO range of 100–51200; expansion to ISO 409600.

Improved AF performance through 61-point High Density Reticular AF II system with 41 cross-type points, improved center point focusing sensitivity to -3 EV and compatibility down to f/8***.

Accurate subject tracking for stills and video with new EOS Intelligent Tracking and Recognition AF with 360,000-pixel metering sensor.

4K video (4096 x 2160) up to 60 fps (59.94), with an 8.8-Megapixel still frame grab**** in camera.
